The Little Coder’s Predicament
Maddog answered this.

My personal opinion on the issue is: while we do have jscript and WSH, we really need a free (as in speech) language, not one determined by Microsoft’s whim. I’m not denying jscript and WSH are good languages for a beginner. I think jscript (and Ecmascript) is a pretty good, clean language. But please remember that jscript != javascript/Ecmascript. jscript == Microsoft’s crippled version of js.
I’d go for Python, even with its whitespace annoyances because it was designed with educational purposes. Perl is too noisy. I haven’t tried Ruby. No, don’t mention PHP, please.

While Maddog points out that documentation is out there online, I’ll go as far as saying it is not enough. Documentation should be at hand’s reach, that’s a very important piece for a learning curve. No, it’s not enough for it to be online, not everybody has permanent access to the Internet. jscript is frustrating because javascript code you find on the internet doesn’t work right away without hacking it. We don’t want that, we wan’t portability.
Also, Maddog says it’s not that bad to use COM. I’d prefer teaching people something open and future-proof.

Speedy

«…because Ica, is going bye-bye.»
